A Category 3 sewage backup in your basement requires full containment, antimicrobial treatment, removal of porous materials like carpet and drywall, and air scrubbing with HEPA filtration. Once clean water contacts building materials, carpet padding, or sits for more than 48 hours, microbial growth begins and the water degrades to Category 2. Without that documentation, adjusters may push back on material removal and argue for drying in place — which is inappropriate and unsafe for gray or black water events.
